About hackertube.io
hackertube.io is an unofficial, independent index of YouTube videos that people recommend to each other in Hacker News comments. It is not affiliated with Andrej Karpathy's HackerTube, with YouTube, or with Hacker News and Y Combinator.
Where the data comes from
All video picks, summaries, labels and comment excerpts come from the public HackerTube data export (exported 2026-10-31), which was built from the open-index/hacker-news archive of every HN comment. Both are released under the Open Data Commons Attribution License 1.0. A video is included there when at least three different people mentioned it in at least three different months.
What this site adds
Every video and every topic has its own page you can link to and find in search, with the HN comments that recommended it and a link back to each original comment. This site shows 4,640 videos: ones recommended at least once and not tied to a single news event, with near-duplicate uploads merged.
Good to know
- Summaries, “why HN likes it” notes and recommendation labels were written by a language model; expect a few percent of noise.
- Comments remain the work of their authors. Video titles, thumbnails and channel names belong to their creators. Videos play in YouTube's privacy-enhanced embedded player, loaded only when you press play.
- This site sets no cookies and runs no tracking.
